Board Elections: The nomination procedure

Who comes up for election?
The basic election procedure envisages that every two years the position of three organizations (out of a total of nine) comes up for election. As part of a transitional mechanism, the second group of three founding organizations whose position comes up for election have been determined based on alphabetical order. (Continuation of their mandate requires nomination and re-election in accordance with the election procedure.) They are:

  • Department of Peace Studies University of Bradford, United Kingdom;
  • Harvard Sussex Program (HSP) Science and Technology Policy Research, University of Sussex, United Kingdom; and
  • International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility (INES), Germany.

Who can be nominated?

  • All organizations that are member of the BWPP Network at the start of the nomination period (15 October 2007) can be nominated for election.
  • A BWPP Network member organization can nominate itself.
  • A BWPP Network member organization can nominate another Network member organization.
  • A BWPP Network member organization currently serving on the Board of Directors can be re-elected.

(The Board of Directors solicits additional nominations if an insufficient number of candidate organizations is put forward.)

Action by Network member organizations seeking nomination or nominating another Network member

By no later than 12 November 2007 the Network member organizations seeking election shall

  • formally notify the BWPP Director (director@bwpp.org) of their intent;
  • submit a brief description of the organization;
  • submit a brief statement on the motivation for seeking (re-)election; and
  • include in their submission any endorsements they may have received from other Network member organizations.

This information will be made available to all Network member organizations in time for the voting.

In the case that a Network member organization wishes to nominate another member organization for election, then it must provide all the required information to the BWPP Director. It must also ensure that the organization it puts forward is agreeable to the nomination.

Action by the Board of Directors

The sitting Board of Directors screens all nominations based on the agreed criteria (see below) and then submits the final list of nominees to the Network member organizations for election. The decision and its motivation are formally recorded in the minutes of the meeting. All nominated organizations are informed of the decision.

The Board of Directors considers the following criteria (listed in non-hierarchical order) in preparing the final list of nominees:

  • Geographic representation;
  • The candidate organization has a demonstrable major interest in BW disarmament or develops other activities that contribute directly to the mission of the BWPP;
  • Organizational skills;
  • Contributions made to the BWPP;
  • The number of nominations the Network member organization has received, in particular from the region in which it is located; and
  • Other relevant factors.

The Board of Directors will decide on the shortlist at its formal meeting in December 2007. The shortlist is subsequently transmitted to all Network member organizations in time for the ballot.

Nomination period

The nomination period ends on 12 November 2007.
