The Coupland Competition 2008 |

The Coupland Prize On Wednesday 20 August 2008, the BWPP will launch our first competition as a new initiative to raise awareness of the dangers of the misuse of the biological sciences in a way designed to appeal to the next generation of life science practitioners the “Coupland Prize”. The award is named after Mr Robin Coupland who is funding the prize money from the proceeds of the sales of his paintings from the exhibition XXYX: the Biology of Love . Participating students are requested to write a draft of a letter to their University Dean explaining why the 1972 Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) should be included as a mandatory component in the curricular of undergraduate courses pertaining to the life sciences. The letter must be no more than 800 words long, and written in English.
Who can enter the competition? All undergraduate students engaged in the study of life science disciplines. The competition is open to all qualifying students from any country, but must be written in English. How do I enter the competition? Entries should be in electronic format and emailed to: competition (at) bwpp.org. Participants will receive an email confirming receipt of their entry. If you do not receive this, please contact the BWPP at competition (at) bwpp.org or call BWPP on +41 (0)22 908 5834. Each entry must have the name of the student, university department, name of undergraduate course enrolled in, student registration number, postal address and email address. This information will not count towards the 800 word limit. When does the competition close and how do I find out if I've won? The competition closing date is 31st October 2008. Any entries received after that date will not be eligible for consideration. The winners will be formally announced at the 2008 Meeting of States Parties to the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention in Geneva, Switzerland. Winners will receive notification by post and email by 30 November 2008. Who will judge the competition? BWPP staff and network members, Robin Coupland and the Implementation Support Unit (ISU) of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention will judge the entries. All decisions are final and not subject to appeal. If I enter, what will happen to my work? The winning entries will be posted on the BWPP and ISU websites. Winning entries will be considered copyright of the BWPP. All other entries will also be considered eligible for free use by the BWPP. How can I let my friends/students know?
