Status of Participation in the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention. As of 20 November 2006 the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) has 155 States Parties. Forty States are not yet party to the convention. Sixteen States signed the BTWC before it entered into force on 26 March 1975, but have not yet ratified it. Twenty-four States have neither signed nor acceded to the BTWC.
The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) entered into force on 29 April 1997, twenty-two years after the BTWC. Nevertheless, it has managed to attract 33 more ratifications and accessions than the BTWC in less than 10 years since entry into force. |

The BioWeapons Prevention Project is dedicated to reinforcing the norm against the weaponization of disease. It is a global civil society activity that tracks governmental and other behaviour under the treaties that codify the norm. It nurtures and is empowered by an international network, and acts both through that network and its publications. |
